Milan Furniture Fair 2010

Despite some of our favourite suppliers getting stranded in Milan, we still got a full report back of all the amazing things they saw at the fair. From fully recyclable sofas to city sky line tables and everything else in between. Below are some of the things that stood out to us.

Soane Museum

Last Friday, I went to Lincoln’s Inn Fields (near Holborn station) to visit number 13. On first examination this house seems to be quite usual, but it’s Sir John Soane’s House and in fact I couldn’t have imagined all the amazing things that are inside it.

But, first of all, I just want to remind you who he was. John Soane was a very famous architect of the 18th century. He worked for almost 45 years on the construction of one of the most important of London’s Monuments: the Bank of England (which is now substantially demolished apart from the exterior walls).

So in his Museum, you can see a lot of things exposed like pictures, sculptures etc… But, to me, the most interesting thing to see is Soane’s work on light. It was quite amazing to see how he managed to have reflected light (most of the time, yellow light) in his rooms. In fact, the room that I preferred was the Breakfast Room with the dome and the light coming down from the lantern above it. I was very impressed by the environment that this light creates on the room.

Then there’s also the Picture Room which has pivoting panels with pictures on them. The aim of these panels is to protect the pictures from light and to save space. Besides, when all the panels are opened, you have an unexpected view to the basement floor and the alabaster sarcophagus of Ramses II’s father which is quite impressive.

So if you have some time one day go to this incredible house full of surprises (which in addition is free ;))!

Open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm.

Radical Nature / Art and Architecture for a Changing Planet

RadicalNature

The Radical Nature exhibition at the Barbican combines engaging and shocking works by artists and architects who have made it their goal to find solutions for our changing planet.

Professor Wolf Hilbertz has pioneered the use of artificial underwater coral reefs to control coastal erosion. A short documentary shows an intervention in the Indian Ocean where coils are being set in place to encourage future growth of coral reef. To learn more about this project, visit

Henrik Hakansson’s installation
Fallen Forest sort of looks like part of a movie set because of its enormity. It is a grove of fully-grown trees from the rainforest completely replanted and bizarrely flipped horizontally within the gallery. In this ridiculous manipulation of nature, there is the realisation of the effects of the relationship between man and nature. Oddly enough, they continue to grow horizontally through an effective irrigation system.

There was also one more installation that was strangely comfortable and desirable in a city like London. It was a tiny room encased in mirrors with the top of the room open to natural light and the ground covered as a quaint English garden. Despite the reflections, eventually you adjust and feel as though you are in a field that goes on forever. As the urge to want to have a picnic or roll around in the lush green grass builds…. I end up running into my own reflection.

The exhibit is showing until 18 October 2009 at the Barbican Gallery.

AA's Party in Bedford Square

AAParty

The Summer Term exhibition of the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA) presents a review of projects from the AA’s 2008/2009 year. It takes place in Bedford Square from the 3rd of July to the 25th of July and everyone can go there to see drawings, models and even working prototypes by the AA’s students. But, if you don’t have time to go there, you can also have a look on: www.aaschool.ac.uk to see some of the projects.

I went there on the 3rd, it was quite busy but I saw some interesting things. In fact, it’s fascinating to see how they are working, all drawings, CAD and technical documents and at last, models, which always look amazing.

The AA’s students are working on new ways to build with innovative materials; it’s why most of the models are very conceptual, it’s just showing what shape you can get, what you can do with these materials. There are also a few full size working prototypes, which are very impressive.

In addition, AA’s students have also built a very nice summer pavilion in Bedford Square. It’s made of fine wooden edges, which have been drawn by computer. So if you are around there, go have a look to this beautiful wood structure!

Casiopea Lighting
One of our new finds in lighting is this lovely hand-woven copper chandelier from Jordi Ribaudí taking inspiration from the astronomical constellation and the eponymous queen who boasted an unrivalled beauty with vanity to match. We like the organic form and the horizontal design.

So it seems through the last few days that spring time is upon us. Or maybe it is just a tease. It at least opens the office up to a beautiful skyline and lighting.

Ochre Lighting
This is one of the latest finds at 100% Design this year. We have now used them in a few projects that needed that last thing to finish it off. The lighting, along with the furniture and accessories, is made amazingly well with beautiful materials and a level of decadence that is hard to find.
